for you what joe biden said in new hampshire yesterday. >> the last thing the president and i want to do is have the cam taken get in the way of anything. the most important thing is people's safety and people's health and property being saved here. >> dave wiegel, could this make-or-break his presidency? >> i think you're going to see a lot of wind breakers and north face jackets and fewer blazers and ties for a couple of days as he go it to these fema centers and does what he can, which is not a lot. he can stop in the path of the storm. the problem for obama that i see, and it's hard to ascertain for a couple of days how this affects him, is this a ground game campaign. they said this for a year. they're right. this campaign wins if it gets out votes at a more effective high rate than the romney campaign does. how does that change it if power goes out in places where people manage phone calms and charging up ipads door to door. that is what i think would have people worried. more than where the president physically can campaign. how much money do they put into tv ads people won't be s

. paul ryan continues to campaign today. >> clinton and biden were out today. >> president obama is the president of the united states. by the way, we only have one president. i don't like the idea of mitt romney frying to go around and pretend he's the president of the united states when he's not. president obama canceled campaign events, and then governor romney -- this is a statement about what you do as president. that's why this storm is an important issue. you have to be president of all the american people and not president of new jersey and virginia because they have republican governors. why didn't mitt romney bother to call the other three? maybe because he has a record where he said back in the defwat last year when he was running trying to be severely conservatively that he would cut fema funding and send it back to the states and privatize it. this is why it's so important, because it illustrates the importance of government and illustrates the two fundamentally two different choices of the two candidates running for the highest office in land. >> chip, i think we ha

chief economist for vice president joe biden, also an msnbc contributor. jared, as we look over these estimates and they're really rough now in the very beginning. >> very rough. >> sandy could cost when it's all said and done, the total $20 billion or more. exceeding the damage certainly from irene last year which was about 12 to $16 billion. meantime moody's an lytics estimate economic losses will total $10 billion a day, lost wages, production, sales for businesses. do you think that estimate is on target? >> yeah, i think that estimate is on target but i believe moody's said they're not going to alter their estimate for gdp in the fourth quarter because some of this will be made up and also some of this stuff that gets destroyed you have to put people to work to rebuild it. that actually adds to gross domestic product. it subtracts from the net but adds to the growth. >> one thing i'm being told in my ear, we have an updated death toll i want to pass along to everyone. we now have 27 -- 29, excuse me, 29 confirmed deaths. again, we started this hour it was 18. so the numbers
